Sample of the proposed title page for the Canadian edition of In the Village of Viger. Scott disliked it: in a letter to Flemington (3 March 1945), he writes, "I do not like this title page; it seems to me to lack interest. I would have expected something stronger as I remember the bold design for the Jacket and this title page does not follow with enough distinction. The three long lines seem to be monotonous, and there is no real design in the page.... I know how interested you all are in this book and I dislike having to give this opinion and I know you will give it due weight in your decision and try to get something better. I know too that you will understand my rather forthright expressions".
